The Use of Animals for Research Purposes Enables Advances in Medicine and Helps to Improve Animal Welfare

Researchers of the Biotechnical Faculty presented work on test animals, which concerns not only the acquisition of results but increasingly also animal welfare.

The use of animals for research purposes dates back to antiquity, but the systematic use of animals in research began in the 16th century. The number of animals used increased until the previous century, when clear professional and ethical guidelines for handling animals in experiments were established.

Animals for research purposes can only be handled by specifically qualified researchers, who must undergo regular training regarding not only their research but also, and above all, contributing to animal welfare in research.

Animals can’t express with words that they don’t feel well or are in pain, but if we observe them the right way, we can see that their facial expressions, snouts, whiskers, ear placement and cheeks change, indicating how they feel. Through observation, animal welfare can be enhanced even in experiment conditions.

Through visual material available to visitors of the stall, we presented the differences in facial expressions between laboratory animals that feel well and those whose welfare is not optimal. Visitors were able to test their own knowledge, determining, based on visual material, how an animal feels, what they should look for and what a picture can tell.

Through the Curator for a Day cycle, the National Gallery opens its doors to different views and reveals stories behind works of art, but what is the most important is the personal touch of the selected celebrity, who guides the visitors in a friendly atmosphere.

The Evolucija. (Evolution) Performance

Evolucija. (Evolution), a movement and acrobatic performance, was a gift of the project European Researchers Night – Humanities Rock! and Pionirski dom for children under the auspices of the Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth and the Ljubljana Association of Friends of Youth.

First there was nothing, a void, darkness, vacuum. Then one day – bang, and the earth started to spin. It was empty at first, devoid of life… How boring!

Just a few millions years later, the earth was settled by humans. Who were their ancestors? What path did they tread from swinging on tree branches to walking on the moon? How did they evolve, change; where are they today?

Evolucija guided the audience through the evolutionary path trodden by humans and presented this incredible journey through the language of circus and variety. The circus of humanity became a circus on the stage in this amusing movement and acrobatic performance.

Interviews with Scientists, Artists and Researchers

The European Researchers’ Night – Humanities Rock! project brings together scientists, artists and researchers from the University of Ljubljana as well as many peers of theirs. It aims to draw attention to the importance of the work of scientists and researchers and to the dilemmas and challenges they face in their work and their life, as well as bring their discoveries closer to the widest possible public.

The project also presents scientists, researchers and artists in a series of video stories that is taking shape and being published in the Stories tab.

On the European Researchers’ Night, a projection of the first video stories was held in the Atrium of ZRC SAZU.

The Animal Within

Is there an animal lurking in your body? Do you know your ancestors? Is body hair annoying or useful? Plus a discussion on snails, fish, hedgehogs and chickens.

The purpose of the Animal Within activity was to present the evolutionary history of the human body, the characteristics of particular organs and to facilitate an understanding of their functions through a multi-sensory experience.

The evolution, form, functioning, even certain responses and behaviours of living beings are largely conditioned by their genomes, i.e. the gene sequences in their chromosomes. The diversity created by differences in genomes is key to the process of natural selection, which in turn powers microevolution and the emergence of new species. From the genomic point of view, human evolution did not start only seven million years ago (the age of the oldest known fossil hominid) but reaches much further into the geological past.

For example, hair, which covers the human body, appeared approximately 245 million years ago in a group of therapsids, long before the appearance of the first mammals. The structure of our arms is analogous to the limbs of the first terrestrial vertebrates living 360 million years ago, while the design of our jaw is found in the gill arches of fish living more than 450 million years ago. The physical properties defining humans are thus inherited and somewhat modified structures that may have originally served completely different purposes.

East Asian Objects in Our Homes

Are you interested in East Asian art? Do you have a decorative object or work of art from China, Japan or Korea at home and would like to know more about it?

10:00-18:00

New Square, Ljubljana

VAZ

Members of the East Asian Collections in Slovenia project, hailing from the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana and from ZRS Koper, invited visitors to bring it to their stall to explore it together and have an interesting chat with the object.

The European researchers’ Night was an opportunity to look into when and for what purpose the object was made, what the motifs represent and much more. If the object was large, visitors could bring a photo instead.

If they wished, they could fill in a questionnaire, beforehand so that the project team members could prepare for the meeting with as much data as possible to give them even more details about the objects. The filled-in questionnaire could be sent in advance to: natasa.vampeljsuhadolnik@ff.uni-lj.si.

I, Animal

Humans resemble other animal species to a much greater extent than we might think. At the same time, our species has undergone unimagined evolutionary development, which sets us apart in numerous aspects.

10:00-18:00

New Square, Ljubljana

At a stall in the Novi trg square, visitors were able to familiarise themselves with certain anatomic and physiological characteristics of humans and their distant and not-so-distant relatives.

In playful workshops prepared by researchers of the Biotechnical Faculty, university students of biology answered visitors’ questions such as: Do frogs have livers? Which is the main sense used by whales? Were Australopithecus better at climbing or walking on two legs? Do all tall animals have blood? And many many others.

Visitors were able to test their knowledge of different animals and their internal structures, as well as to see and even touch quite a few interesting specimens from the animal kingdom.

As the European Researchers’ Night traditionally takes place on the last Friday of September, primary and secondary schools were also be able to access an online e-classroom with I, Animal content on the ARNES Učilnice portal on 30 September 2022.
