Every Species Needs a Name – Scopoli, a Pioneer of Taxonomy in Slovenia

To mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, a Slovenian natural scientist of world renown, researchers of the Biotechnical Faculty will present his historic role and species as the basic unit of biodiversity in 2023. The interactive presentation will include a demonstration at a stall and a discussion.

Species are the basic unit of biodiversity. Without species, we could not talk about nature, we could hardly enjoy its benefits and protect ourselves from disease.

Vernacular names of species are helpful, but inadequate. For example, Slovenian vernacular names for the English primrose include bičica, brkončica, igelc, jaglič, piskalica, žoltica, trobentica

While a plethora of names enriches the language, it also gives rise to communication issues. This is why natural scientists of today use a two-part scientific taxonomy of species that was introduced in the 18th century by Carl von Linné, a Swedish scientist. The English primrose thus has the scientific name Primula vulgaris.

Less famously, his contemporary working in Slovenia, Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, contributed substantially to Linné’s classification with scientific descriptions and species names from the territory that is now Slovenia.

2023 will present an opportunity to mark the 300th anniversary of Scopoli’s birth and the historic role of this scientist of world renown working in Slovenia.

Researchers of the Biotechnical Faculty will celebrate the anniversary of his birth with activities including an interactive presentation on the historical development and importance of biological systematics, an exhibition, an informative brochure, guided workshops as part of biology classes in selected schools and a guided tour and discussion during the European Researchers’ Night.

Masks and Wassailing in Romanian Traditions

One of the stalls of the European Researchers’ Night was dedicated to Romanian tradition, where animal masks have a significant ritualistic and symbolic role.  The attention was focused on wassailing, which is a multifaceted show throughout Romania, co-created by words, music, motion, dance and artistic performances.

A village turns into a big stage serving multiple roles as the carnival develops, enabling a group of young boys to play their parts. They are merely the main collective actor in wider socio-dramatic action, where men, women and fantastic beings perform in various ways. The village is not only a stage; it can also be an audience, actor, director or dramatist. The villagers are usually aware that they are creating a show, a carnival performance, and that they are part of it.

Wassailing with the “Goat”

Mimetic plays with an animal mask as the main prop can be found throughout the world and are very diverse; they often appear in Central and Eastern Europe as well.

The goat mask is one of the most widespread; it is related to a character called “rourita” or “blind man”, whose existence in Europe is attested even in ancient times.

Rituals, myths and legends from the Daco-Romanian area are part of the hunter culture, but “a hunter ideology can become a pastoral ideology”, as explained by Mircea Eliade, one of the most prominent Romanian anthropologists.

In the Carpathian lands along the Danube, the image of an animal, achieved by dressing as one and performing a simple show, represents aspects from the lives of animals living in the region. The theatrical image of the goat, however, represents a mythological animal that is separated from reality and normally serves as an abstract symbol for soil fertility.

DIE EVOLUTIONSBREMSE

This exhibition by Tim Prezelj was dedicated to scientific research in medicine, pharmacy and biology where laboratory animals are used. To this end, people throughout history have created quite a few different life forms that exist only due to and for the purposes of the scientific research process. The most numerous such group comprises mice and rats.

10:00-22:00

Kapelica Gallery, Likozarjeva 1, Ljubljana

Legislation on working with such organisms is very strict and detailed, particularly in Western countries. However, as a rule, it requires the killing of all laboratory animals involved in the experiment and the destruction of the animal remains produced.

The art installation was not intended to moralise and judge the exploitation of animals for scientific research purposes, nor the people who oppose it. The work of art aimed merely to encourage dialogue and reflection in the public and to raise awareness in society about the background of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other preparations used in everyday life.

The material, technique and concept of each project by a student or group of students were decided by each artist.

The project encouraged students to employ new ways of creation and reflection about the topics of corporeality, perception, awareness, instinctiveness and ethics in relation to animals, also presenting the importance of art in addressing this theme.

The exhibition, held at the Slovenian Museum of Natural History, presented the works of art created within the project as a single joined composition.

Sweet shop

As part of the Sweet Shop, children playfully found out: do animals also like sweets, where do they find sugar, which animals eat food similar to humans, which food do we humans need to help us stay healthy, and why do we easily eat too much sugar.

10:00-18:00

New Square, Ljubljana

Humanistika Logo

Younger and older visitors tested how much sugar is in each type of food by determining how many bags of sugar will weigh down packets of pictured food items and sweet drinks. The role of fiber in the diet was also clearly shown, as well as the benefit of certain carbohydrates in the diet, the types of sugar in food, drinks, fruit and vegetables and what affects the uptake of sugar into the blood.

Through the specially developed Sweetscope game, children and younger teenagers guessed while moving about how the quantity of sugar in the diet of animals and whether bees can make honey from sugar water. The game attracted mainly younger teenagers.

Researchers at the Faculty of Medicine plan to adapt the game for individual or group play via the website by the end of 2022.

Species-Rich Meadows and Cattle in Slovenian Alps in the Last 500 Years

Until recently, Slovenia was exceptional in Europe for its high share of species-rich meadows, which are an important element of a healthy landscape culture, but now such meadows are rapidly disappearing.

The lecture and discussion on this topic were conducted by Tadej Pavković, the author of an excellent master’s thesis on cattle in Carniola, Carinthia and Styria in the 16th and 17th centuries, and Žiga Zwitter, PhD, an assistant professor and researcher at the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, who is co-authoring a scientific monograph on the environmental history and historical ecology of species-rich meadows in the Alps in the last thousand years with Leonid Rasran, PhD, a Viennese botanist.

Tadej Pavković, MA, and Žiga Zwitter, PhD, presented a short selection of research approaches and results on the history of species-rich meadows and livestock over a long period of time, including how to correctly interpret them interdisciplinary and what we can learn from this for a more sustainable future.
