Animals and Humans: What Do Anthropologists Do?

The projection of the film Okolje in živali: delo antropologov (Environment and Animals: What Do Anthropologists Do?) and a subsequent talk addressed the intertwinement of human and animal lives, the evolving interspecies relations and the role of anthropologists in this context.

ZRC Atrium, New Square 2, Ljubljana

The film presented how ethnological or anthropological knowledge and approaches benefited individuals in their work in connection with the environment and animals. The applied perspective was complemented by the views of researchers.

For both, the starting point were many aspects of the coexistence and intertwining of the lives of humans and animals in different environments, situations and for different purposes – such as issues of human encroachment into different (protected) environments, the development of human habitats at the expense of animal and plant habitats, animal husbandry for food, and the variability of anthropocentric views on animals in the past and present.

Interviewees in the film: Živa Gobbo (Focus, Association for Sustainable Development), Darja Kranjc (Škocjan Caves Regional Park), Špela Ledinek, PhD (INS ZRC SAZU), Lucija Gartner (Gartner Tourist Farm), Miha Kozorog, PhD (EIKA, Faculty of Arts)

The event was suitable for the general public, university students and secondary schools.

For visits by secondary schools, registration was required by email at sarah.lunacek@ff.uni-lj.si.

In the morning programme, which started at 8 am, researchers first introduced primary school, secondary school and university students to the Slovanska Library and its rare books and other publications (newspapers, manuscripts etc.).

This was followed by a workshop with newspaper materials (Kmetijske in rokodelske novice (Agricultural and Artisan News), Slovenec (The Slovenian) etc.) and a workshop on searching for materials in COBISS. After a break, there was a lexicology workshop (working with dictionaries) and a linguistics workshop (Slovenian and Slovak phraseology).

Workshops:

– Among the Shelves of the Slovanska Library (Erika Marolt, Tomaž Miško, Ljubljana City Library (MKL)),

– Let’s Explore Together (Tomaž Miško, Erika Marolt, MKL),

– Linguistics Workshop: Online Dictionaries and the Franček Portal (Špela Petric Žižić, Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU)),

– Phraseological Workshop: Slovenian and Slovak Paremiology (Matej Meterc, ZRC SAZU).

The central part of the afternoon programme, which started at 2 pm, was a linguistic/literary conference with international participants, followed by a discussion.

Linguistic and literary science contributions:

– Hotimir Tivadar, PhD: Public Speaking and “Animals”,

– Simon Atelšek, PhD: Metaphors in Beekeeping Terminology,

– Jozef Pallay, PhD, Matej Meterc, PhD, Polona Leskovar: Animals in Paremiology,

By conducting experiments, we determined different properties of honey (viscosity, crystallisation, the presence of reducing sugars, sucrose, water and ash content, pollen analysis etc.). We compared different types of honey in terms of their general properties.

There were 10 to 15 pupils participating in the workshop, and they will be able to flow freely between individual experiments. The faculty took care of the guided conducting of natural science experiments, while the teachers were expected to supervise the pupils and keep them safe.

Pressure on the Natural Environment due to Recreational Activities

In this stall on geoinformatics, researchers from the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering presented how global navigation systems work. The participants were able to view data acquired with activity trackers, such as Garmin, Polar and Suunto, and take a closer look at some walking, running and cycling routes.

With their recreational activities, humans intentionally or unintentionally encroach on and alter animal habitats. Walking, running and cycling can put considerable pressure on the natural environment, which must be monitored and mitigated with appropriate measures.

One of the most effective tools for this is geoinformatics, capturing data through remote sensing and navigation devices.

This workshop familiarised the public – it was suitable for anyone from primary school age onwards – with how global navigation systems work and what kind of data they yield. We took a look at how we can acquire and process data from sports devices, so-called activity trackers (Garmin, Polar, Suunto, smartphones etc.), and establish which routes are under more pressure than others.

Coordinators: Krištof Oštir, PhD, and Jernej Tekavec, PhD, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, Andrej Verlič, PhD, Tivoli, Rožnik and Šiška Hill Landscape Park

You can listen to a radio interview about the pressures on the natural environment here.
