Minezang at Dobravlje Primary School

On 28 September, a very special event took place at Dobravlje Primary School, which “sprang up” spontaneously at the school and continued the work of the European Researchers’ Night – Humanities Rock! project.

It was stimulated by the publication of the monograph Minezang, edited by Mateja Gaber, PhD, as well as by a concert of medieval love lyrics and the echo of Minezang in the media.

The students, dressed in costumes reminiscent of medieval noblewomen, read German medieval chivalric lyrics in front of the assembled audience of students.

Prinicipal of the School Mirjam Kalin wrote: “When we think of science and research, we most often think of scientists in white coats, using various instruments in laboratories to carry out research in the fields of chemistry, physics, medicine, technology, engineering, etc. Few people think that research and scientific work is also carried out in the fields of social sciences and humanities.”

However, the poems offer a reflection on a selection of words used by medieval poets to express love. They also offer a reflection on how we express love today. Is there a piece of beauty and poetry in them?  Are the words commonplace or do they remain unspoken because of embarrassment or some other prejudice?

“Minezang was a sung song. The Minezang poets and their performances could be compared to those of top musicians like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen,” concluded Mirjam Kalin, wishing the students that the songs would enrich their expression and add a touch of nobility that would brighten everyone’s day.

The event was organised by librarian Irma Krečič Slejko, teachers Polona Puc and Sonja Makuc, and principal Mirjam Kalin.

Poetry was read by Pavlina Černigoj, Lia Krapež, Karin Pizzoni, Brina Birsa, Lea Krojs and Veronika Stibilj.
