Geologists (palaeontologists) are scientists that study the development of life on Earth as revealed by fossils. Fossils are significant indicators of a living environment, provide information about the evolution of living beings and are also important for determining the age of geological strata, which is why understanding them and depicting them with images are crucial for understanding Earth’s development. AI tools are becoming more and more adept at processing and creating image information. In this activity, we will compare fossil sketches and models created by the participants based on scientific discoveries to those created by AI technology. In doing so, we will present the work of palaeontologists as well as graphic design and modelling techniques, evaluating the significance of scientific work and AI tools.

We will draw the fossil materials from one of the largest and most comprehensive geological collections in Slovenia, kept by the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering. All activities will thus be based on original specimens of fossil remains.

The event is being prepared for you by Dr Petra Žvab Rožič, Tristan Rome, Dr Luka Gale, Dr Helena Gabrijelčič Tomc and Dr Deja Muck (UL NTF).

Due to their appearance and friendly character, short-nosed dog breeds, such as pugs, bulldogs, Boston terriers and Pekingese, are increasingly popular. However, selective breeding to achieve their characteristic look with a shortened face results in the narrowing of their upper respiratory tract, which leads to brachycephalic syndrome. The workshop will explore how AI helps recognise and treat breathing problems in short-nosed animals. We will highlight the ethical aspects of breeding these breeds and present how AI contributes to a better understanding of their health problems.

Playing and Learning the Romanian Language

Play can roughly be described as a rules-based activity done for fun. A particular activity will likely be described as play if it seems interesting, funny or entertaining.

At a stall in Mestni Trg, Ioana Jieanu, a lector  for the Romanian language at the Faculty of Arts, will, along with four of her students (Brita Bautin, Katarina Rozman, Katarina Krečič, Zala Rogulić), prepare some games for learning basic-level Romanian: saying hello, the verb “to be”, some vocabulary with a Slavic etymology, food, both in physical and AI format. At the end, winners of the games will be rewarded with Romanian chocolate.

The event is organized by dr. Ioana Carmen Jieanu, Brita Bautin, Katarina Rozman, Katarina Krečič and Zala Rogulić (UL FF).

Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Global Students’ Responses to ChatGPT Compared to Slovenia

This presentation relates to one of the most extensive global studies yet exploring how students perceived ChatGPT in early 2024.

The introduction of the ChatGPT chatbot to the general public in November 2022 was a turning point in introducing artificial intelligence to higher education. Due to its simple use and natural-language conversation with users, it quickly drew global attention. As one of the most advanced and fastest-growing AI-driven consumer applications, it has won popularity among students. As young people are often at the forefront of the uptake of new technologies, their perception is particularly important in a discussion about ChatGPT. This presentation thus relates to one of the most extensive global studies yet exploring how students perceived ChatGPT in early 2024. Responses by 23,218 students from 109 countries, including Slovenia, provide an interesting insight into various aspects of ChatGPT, such as its use, performance, regulation and ethical concerns, satisfaction and attitude, studies-related challenges and results, skill development, labour market and skill mismatch, emotions. By comparing Slovenia and global trends, the presentation provides a broad insight into the impact of artificial intelligence in higher education and on students across the world, as well as raises important questions about the future of technology and its place in society.

Archaeology vs Artificial Intelligence

In recent years, archaeology has become a distinctly interdisciplinary science, combining the fields of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and technology, so the development of artificial intelligence is a groundbreaking step in research regardless whether the work involves data or archaeological objects.

In addition to numerous advantages, however, it brings a number of disadvantages. How do we face new challenges, which have been knocking at our door for some time? We will endeavour to show visitors of the stall how to recognise the limits of what is manageable based on good and bad practices and with an interactive one-on-one workshop.

Getting to Know Bracken: Botanical Press Workshop and MSCA Project Presentation

We’ll use the botanical press technique to print leaves of bracken, birch and other plants on paper.

This workshop will present bracken, which is called stelja ‘litter’ in Bela Krajina as it was traditionally used for animal bedding there. Using a botanical press, we’ll print postcards with leaves of bracken, birch and other plants found in bracken-heavy areas. In addition to practical work, we will present the results of an ethnographic study so you can get acquainted with bracken and sites of bracken, the look of which has provided Bela Krajina with its specific character. Although bracken sites are now recognised as a cultural landscape with a rich biodiversity, they are disappearing rapidly due to people abandoning livestock farming and mowing bracken.

The workshop will present a demonstration cell combining software and hardware as well as deep learning algorithms, enabling a simple demonstration of the operation of these methods in different applied domains. The cell includes cameras, a graphical user interface and five demonstration programs demonstrating the classification of wooden boards, the detection of surface anomalies, the counting of polyps, the detection of traffic signs and the detection of corners in textile products. We have developed it with the intention of enhancing the understanding and use of these methods in practical scenarios and of bringing such technology closer to the general public.

In this flexible and dynamic world, machine learning and artificial intelligence are increasingly involved in everyday processes, changing them and helping veterinarians. The stall will present some tools in veterinary medicine, their strengths and weaknesses and the use of artificial intelligence in the basic fields of biomedical science. The aim is to present how artificial intelligence and machine learning help veterinarians to visitors of the European Researchers’ Night. We will demonstrate different examples of machine learning and artificial intelligence that are used in veterinary medicine, particularly in preclinical research, and are also relevant to the work of a clinical veterinarian.
