Presentation of D1-Glia Project: Discovering a New Role of Dopamine in Astrocytes

Did you know that dopamine, a chemical substance in the human brain that regulates mood and motivation, affects not only neurons but other cells in the brain? For a long time, scientists have explored the activity of dopamine particularly in relation to neurons, but a new study provides fascinating results about the effect of dopamine on astrocytes, special star-shaped cells in the brain that support neuron activity

The research team has discovered that dopamine stimulates astrocytes to provide energy to neurons through a process called aerobic glycolysis. This discovery offers a new insight into how dopamine takes part in brain activity and opens up new possibilities to understand the role of dopamine in regulating mood and behaviour. The study could contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches to treating disorders such as depression, where dopamine activity is weakened.

The event will present an opportunity to get familiarised with new research avenues in brain science and discuss the potential applications of this discovery. Join us and discover more about this fascinating topic!

The event will be held in English.

The event is being prepared for you by Dr Keita Sugiyama (UL MF).

Love Knows no Bounds… It Doesn’t Stop at Research Either!

Are you interested in how young researchers research love, sexuality and sexual violence in different parts of the world? Is love universal or culture-specific? What do young ethnologists and cultural anthropologists have to say about love, sexuality and sexual violence? Is the attitude to love and sexuality changing in the modern world shaped by modern technology?

Science as a Profession, Research as a First Job

What should you do after you finish your studies? Why not be a scientist and researcher? We’ll present why you definitely should. What do scientists/researchers wish their mentors, colleagues and employers asked them but haven’t yet? Will they ever ask these questions? And what would the answers be?

How to Tightly Stack Round Particles?

You must have wondered sometime how to stack apples or other round fruits so that they take up as little space as possible. Similar challenges are faced by physicists and chemists when they research the structure of crystals and other solid substances.

We’ll take a look at some mathematical and physical aspects of the structure of crystals made of hard and soft balls as models of atomic or macromolecular colloidal crystals, also touching upon so-called contact forces between elastic bodies. Finally, we will dwell on quasicrystals – orderly substances lacking the positional order typical of regular crystals.

With increasingly accessible machine translation apps and platforms, transitioning from one language to another seems simple and just a click away for everyone with an internet connection. Even a more everyday example of using GPS devices shows how people’s capacity for spatial orientation has weakened, as this ability wanes without practice. The same applies to language competences, which are not automatically saved in your brain but wither away if not regularly refreshed. With constant use, machine translation devices adapt and improve translated texts as well as gain more and more power. What is the role of literary translators in a context of increasingly present translation engines, and how does this affect their profession, education and copyright?

In this round-table discussion moderated by Katja Zakrajšek, a literary translator, the topics above will be reflected upon by:

  • Margot Nguyen Béraud (France), a literary translator and co-founder of the En chair et en os international collective, chair of the advisory board of the French ATLAS (Association for the Promotion of Literary Translation, active in Arles, France).
  • Dr Nadja Dobnik (Slovenia), a professor at the translation department of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana and literary translator.
  • Rosario Martín Ruano (Spain), a researcher and professor at the University of Salamanca as well as member of the TRADIC (Translation, Ideology, Culture) Research Group.

In collaboration with the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts, Embassy of Spain in Slovenia and Slovenian Association of Literary Translators (DSKP).

Supported by the Institut de France in Paris and part of the programme Refaire le monde, le festival de la francophonie.

How do you feel about a day full of interesting facts about sleep and nutrition? Come and join our workshops in Mestni Trg, where you’ll discover lots of interesting stuff – how sweet your favourite drinks really are, how important having a good night’s sleep is for how you feel, how much power there is in your handshake, how sleep affects children with developmental disorders and their parents (that’s right – it affects their parents or guardians too), plus much more.
How are we going to look for balance between sleep and nutrition?
Researchers from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Medicine, and the University Rehabilitation Institute Soča will present interesting and surprising discoveries about the significance of sleep quality. Did you know that sleep problems negatively affect not only healthy people, but even more so children with developmental disorders and their parents or guardians? Have you ever considered how many times a night they get up and when the last time they had a good night’s sleep was?
Researchers from the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, will show, in very explicit terms, how much sugar popular sweet drinks contain, as well as which other foods are full of sugar. All this sugar affects the composition of a person’s body. You’ll be able to step on our portable scales and find out your body’s composition. Our team will explain your results and share a few good tips on how to keep your body vital. In the end, you’ll be able to shake hands in thanks, and a portable dynamometer will tell you your general muscular power, which is linked to health and longevity.

You can follow us on social media, but nothing beats the live experience. See you in Mestni Trg?
The activities are financed by the EUTOPIA_HEALTH project.
The event is being prepared for you by Dr Katja Groleger Sršen and Dr Evgen Benedik and their teams.

On this walk on city streets, in parks or in the natural environment, we are focusing on expanding our senses provided by digital devices, in this case digital cameras on our so-called smartphones or standalone digital cameras. We will encourage the walk participants to intensively take photos of their environments during the walk, which will take 30 to 45 minutes; then we will meet in a physical and virtual space to collect the images, later analysing them using the Orange machine learning software that is in development at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science. To conclude, there will be a discussion on the usefulness of AI tools in everyday and professional life.

You can participate in any location, in Ljubljana or elsewhere, anywhere in the world. Those who will walk in the Vič district of Ljubljana are invited to join us in lecture room P1 at Zavetiška ulica 5 when they finish.

After the walk, we will collect your photos on a joint server and subsequently analyse them using the Orange tool.

We will meet at the web address that the walk leader will share with all registered walkers a day before the walk on Friday, 27 September, at 11:00 a.m. The walk will take 30 to 45 minutes; it will be followed by a talk (in P1 and on Zoom) around noon.

The photo analysis will be conducted on Monday, 30 September, or Tuesday, 1 October – the exact time will be determined during the post-walk discussion.

The walk will be led by Dr Rajko Muršič, and the photo analysis will be presented by Dr Ajda Pretnar Žagar.

Register at rajko.mursic@ff.uni-lj.si; there will be a maximum of 20 participants.
