Moths and Light Pollution in the Urban Environment

On the European Researchers’ Night, researchers from the Faculty of Education will hold a workshop and guided natural science tour of city streets and remote nooks. The workshop and tour will be intended primarily for children, young people and their parents.

Workshop participants will be acquainted with certain animal species (e.g. cockroaches, snails, spiders, mealworm beetles, wasps, butterflies, toads, hedgehogs and dormice) that share the urban environment with people. They will observed tracks of birds and mammals.

They will also see how animals adapt to the urban environment, where their homes are, what they eat and how people can jeopardise them. They will learn to thoroughly observe and recognise animal tracks (footprints, excrements, food residues, homes etc.).

They will focus on animal species that are active during the night, when people usually sleep and animals can move more freely, so guided tour of the city will also took place in the evening.

Due to the limited number of places available, registration for the workshop is required at the following e-mail address hana.rozman@pef.uni-lj.si. When registering, please indicate:

1. name of the workshop,

2. time of the workshop,

3. number of participants you are registering for the workshop.

The Animal World as a Source of Inspiration for New Materials

Through evolution, animals have developed different structures enabling them to adapt to environmental conditions, defend against predators, feed, move and evolve.

As a result, the animal world can be a limitless source of inspiration to scientists in synthesising new materials with specific properties, possibly providing a solution to many a challenge in medicine, construction, nutrition etc.

Through guided experimental research, primary and secondary school students will assume the roles of scientists to discover and compare the properties of different materials originating in the animal world. Based on reporting the results of the experimental exercise, they will reflect on the advantages and challenges of using such materials in everyday life.

Due to the limited number of places available, registration for the workshops is required at the following e-mail address taja.klemen@pef.uni-lj.si. When registering, please indicate:

In the experimental workshop on this topic, primary and secondary school students will collaborate in the role of scientists and familiarise themselves with the composition of plastic packaging through guided experimental research.

They will discuss how to act sustainably when buying and using food in terms of its packaging and sustainable development.

Due to the limited number of places available, registration for the workshops is required at the following e-mail address katarina.mlinarec@pef.uni-lj.si. When registering, please indicate:

Microplastics: Environmental Protection and Environmental Health Aspects

There is more and more microplastics to be found in oceans and rivers, as well as in the air, drinking water and food. Microplastics are present in different tissues of organisms, but there is insufficient data on its harmful effects, and a lack of research precludes a risk assessment for human health.

These topics will be highlighted in a lecture by Agnes Šömen Joksić, PhD, and Viviana Golja, PhD, (National Institute of Public Health); the event will be moderated by Katarina Mlinarec (Faculty of Education, Centre KemikUm).

Microplastics are small particles of different polymer materials, usually smaller than 5 mm (0.2 in). In terms of their origin, there are primary and secondary microplastics.

Primary microplastics are intentionally produced micro-sized and are added to different products, such as microbeads in skin peeling creams. Secondary microplastics are the result of the degradation of a plastic product in the environment.

Potentially toxic ingredients in a plastic material, which can be released from the polymer structure due to environmental processes, are particularly problematic. It is a fact that the risk to the environment and, consequently, to humans will increase if microplastics pollution continues at the current rate.

How Do Fish Swim at Different Depths?

In this experimental workshop on fish life, primary and secondary school students will use simple implements to make a model fish with a fish bladder. They will submerge the model into “the sea”, i.e. a water bottle, and explore the conditions under which the “fish” swims near the surface or in its depths.

13:00-14:30

Faculty of Education, Lecture Hall P006, Kardeljeva ploščad 16, Ljubljana

Guided by researchers from the Faculty of Education, they will compare the mechanism of the “fish” rising and sinking in the water with such mechanisms in actual fish, discussing the similarities and differences between the model and live fish specimens.
