By mimicking animal movement, children can acquire new motor skills in a fun and relaxed way, which maximises their motivation. Through such skills, they develop movement patterns for greater independence in playing and learning.

Children with special needs often need more encouragement and opportunities to develop their primary potential. Tera/GIB activities involve selected imitations of the movement of 12 animals: frog, horse, cat, rabbit, koala, giraffe, crayfish, dog, snake, elephant, caterpillar and monkey.

They are led by a person directing, encouraging and supervising the child in the selected animal movement. By mimicking the movement of a particular animal, a child with special needs can develop motor independence, steadiness and dexterity, acquire a feel for their body, become more confident and join a group of peers more easily.

Activities can be undertaken individually, in pairs or groups, in a gym, playground or in a natural environment. It is essential that the child experiences pleasure through the movement activity, as this gives them a feeling of acceptance and inclusion. Tera/GIB activities are suitable for children with special needs as well as all other children.

The workshop starting at 10.30 and will be open to the public, especially to senior citizens.

The workshop starting at 9 am will be for pre-school and primary school children.

Computational methods – An Alternative to Animal Testing

Researchers from the Faculty of Pharmacy will present the use of computer (in-silico) methods, which are replacing animal testing in ascertaining the safety of chemical compounds.

Humanistika Logo

Based on a demonstration of different computer programs, the participants will discover how software can replace animal testing, which is often painful and stressful to animals.

The activity will aim to highlight that computer methods can replace such testing to some extent, that they are not ethically questionable and that they are financially advantageous.

How Do Fireflies Glow?

There are five species of fireflies – little beetles emitting a strong, cold light – in Slovenia. The light is produced by converting chemical energy to light energy. This phenomenon is called bioluminescence in living organisms and chemiluminescence in laboratories. It will be presented by researchers from the Faculty of Pharmacy.

How do we produce cold light in a lab? Together with the visitors, the researchers will conduct and explain the course of a chemical reaction generating cold light.

The demonstration will aim to provide an idea of the importance of (bio)chemical reactions taking place in living organisms, which can be used to good effect in many fields of research.

Based on this simple demonstration, the participants will be able to learn about catalysts and their impact on the speed of a chemical reaction, about exothermic reactions and about the evidence of the products of a chemical reaction.

The demonstration will aim to provide an idea of the importance of understanding the course of a process at the chemical reaction level, which generally applies to certain pharmaceutical fields of research.

Children and adults will be able to see the process of making mini-tablets, which are considered animal-friendly medicines due to their small size.

They will also familiarise themselves with 3D-printing technology and make a smart food dispenser for animals, which can be used to safely introduce a therapeutic treatment.

In addition to generating interest in science, the activity will aim to mitigate drug-related fears and uncertainties in children and encourage reflection about the importance of caring for little animals.
