Excerpt from the poem Пуловер за кучето – Pulover za psa by Dimitar Kenarov

Dogs have been our companions for thousands of years. Although we share the world, we do not perceive it in the same way. Their eyesight is coloured by fewer colours than ours, they can see better in the dark but have blurry vision and their world is animated by smells and sounds that we can only imagine.

To better understand our dogs and provide them with a good life we should consider their perspective. Join us for a glimpse into how dogs perceive their world through a short film following the typical day of three dogs living in Slovenia.

Film length: approximately 7 minutes

Interview with Prof. Mirjam Mencej, PhD, ERC Project Holder

Professor Mirjam Mencej, PhD, from the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the Faculty of Arts has been awarded the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant for the project The Roles of the Agency of the Dead in the Lives of Individuals in Contemporary Society (acronym: DEAGENCY).

The project aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the role of the dead in the lives of individuals in contemporary society.

Rather than seeing individuals’ experiences of the dead as mere expressions of ‘folk belief’ or symbols and metaphors for cultural and social problems and changes, the project will consider the dead as active agents in the relationships between individuals and broader social and cultural processes.

As part of the project, Prof. Mencej and her team of researchers will explore how the dead influence individuals’ thoughts, values and behaviour; how they are involved in their social relations; and what impact they have on individuals within the broader social, cultural and political context.

The project will involve ten researchers from Slovenia and abroad, with ethnographic research in Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Prof. Uršula Čebron Lipovec, PhD, Head of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, will talk to Prof. Mirjam Mencej, PhD, about the ERC project DEAGENCY and her research work.

Storytelling in the Dialect of Rezija with Luigia Negro

The folk tales from Rezija, collected and written down by the academic Milko Matičetov, PhD, represent the cultural heritage of Rezija, Slovenia and the world. They became very popular among young people and the general public with the publication of an anthology entitled The Little Beasts of Rezija, published in 1973 with illustrations by Ančka Gošnik Godec.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of the anthology The Little Beasts of Rezija, the Faculty of Education partnered with the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (UL ALUO) in the framework of the European Researchers’ Night – Humanities Rock! project, launching an activity on the theme of animal tales from Rezija.

The Faculty of Education prepared a short introduction to the fairy tales of Rezija and invited Luigia Negro, a storyteller from the Museum of the People of Rezija, to participate. Under the guidance of Suzi Bricelj from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, students from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, majoring in Illustration, illustrated some of the fairy tales from the collection The Little Beasts of Rezija.

From 16 January to 13 February, the illustrations were exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, and from 3 April to 5 May 2023 at the Damir Fiegel Library in Gorizia, Italy. The exhibition of their illustrations was open from 21 August to 29 September at Peti štuk Art Gallery at the Faculty of Arts, and from 23 September onwards the illustrations are on display at the Krpan Gallery in Cerknica, as part of the European Cultural Heritage Days.

At the main event of the European Researchers’ Night, the heritage of Rezijan folk tales and illustrations by ALUO students will be presented by Milena Mileva Blažić, PhD, and Suzi Bricelj. Luigia Negro, President of the Museum of the Ressian People and a storyteller from Rezija, will tell tales from the collection The Little Beasts of Rezija (1973-2023) in Ressian.
