Artificial Intelligence Methods for Real-Time Autonomous Sailing

Passengers will embark a passenger boat licensed to sail the Ljubljanica river and equipped at the bow with a sensor system including RADAR and LIDAR colour and thermal cameras, similar to systems used in self-driving vehicles. The boat will circulate between embark/disembark points along the river.

There is a lack of awareness that having no knowledge and experience can quickly lead to confusion with poisonous plants, which often even results in severe damage to health. Today, artificial intelligence tools can be of help in this context too. The workshop will present the use of artificial intelligence for recognising aromatic medicinal plants: samples will be classified both by observation and by using an app; in a talk with us and other attendees as well as through questionnaires, you will be able to exchange your experience with using medicinal plants. The activity is intended to familiarise attendees with research into medicinal plants using artificial intelligence and to highlight their use (edible, medicinal, aromatic plants), risks (poisonous plants) and challenges (protected plants, invasive plants) through a plant recognition app.

The event is organized by dr. Nina Kočevar Glavač, Matjaž Ravnikar and Katja Schoss (UL FFA).

What Happens to Medicines in Our Bodies?

Pharmacokinetics simulation programs will show what can affect the fate of a medicine in our systems. We will also check whether improperly stored medicines can still be used.

Medicines are most often ingested. With release tests, we will illustrate what goes on in the stomach and small intestine, thereby showing what happens to a medicine in our organisms after we ingest it. Having been released from the digestive system, the active substance of a tablet is absorbed into the systemic bloodstream and transported to the site of action via blood. A proper concentration of the active substance in the blood is important for optimal treatment effectiveness and safety.

The event is organized by Dr. Mojca Kerec Kos and colleagues from the Department of Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetics

The workshop will present a computerised approach to making a cosmetic product; the algorithm will be set based on previous lab experiments. The participants will familiarise themselves with the making of surface and contour graphs and make their own product based on them, further designing it according to their own wishes by selecting certain ingredients.

The event is organized by dr. Maja Bjelošević Žiberna, Mercedes Vitek and Monika Prašnikar (UL FFA).

Little animals-friendly medicines

Faculty of Pharmacy researchers will acquaint participants with research in developing pharmaceutical forms for animals. They will discuss the differences in treating humans and animals as well as the key characteristics allowing a drug to be defined as little animal-friendly.

Children and adults will be able to see the process of making mini-tablets, which are considered animal-friendly medicines due to their small size.

They will also familiarise themselves with 3D-printing technology and make a smart food dispenser for animals, which can be used to safely introduce a therapeutic treatment.

In addition to generating interest in science, the activity will aim to mitigate drug-related fears and uncertainties in children and encourage reflection about the importance of caring for little animals.

Magic Worms and the Nanospider

The Faculty of Pharmacy aims to familiarise children and parents with microparticles and nanofibres as well as their roles in the development of new drugs, which increasingly often involve innovative delivery systems. Such systems can even look like various animals.

Through the microencapsulation method, the participants, with the help of the researchers, will create microparticles in a fun way, change their colours and try to make animal-like shapes.

They will take a look at nanofibres with the naked eye and through a microscope.

They will talk about the numerous potential applications of nanofibres in biomedicine and about what kind of nanospider is used in their production. They will also take a closer look at this device.

Visit to Vič Gymnasium

Researchers from the School of Economics and Business presented the situation of both genders in Slovenia and the EU to the students of the Vič Gymnasium, partly on the basis of statistical data and partly on the basis of calculations prepared within the H2020 Globalinto project. The presentation was followed by a discussion.

The GLOBALINTO project (Capturing the value of intangible assets in micro data to promote the EU’s growth and competitiveness, Grant agreement ID: 822259) developes new measures of intangible assets at firm and industry level. The European Union has, compared to emerging economies, experienced slow productivity growth rates since the 1970’s, which have prompted strong attention to “Productivity puzzles”.

GLOBALINTO’s research and exploitation strategy revolves around three groups of key results in the project: measurement, analysis and policy. The most recent EUKLEMS 2022 together with INTAN-Invest dataset enables analysing intangibles broadly and the market economy at industry and national levels over the period 1995-2018.

The GLOBALINTO Intangibles Survey is a large-scale survey conducted among seven countries (France, Germany, UK, Greece, Finland, Slovenia and Denmark).

Firm-level analysis uses harmonized LEED data in Finland, Denmark, Norway and Slovenia mostly with remote access to data in statistical offices. Global value chains (GVC) from GIOID data show the diffusion of knowledge across countries, which has gained increasing attention in recent years.

The visit took place as part of the activity Gender equality in Slovenia and the EU.
