Science Bazaar: Learning Physics Can Be Fun Too – With Artificial Intelligence Keeping Watch in the Background

The Aerodium wind tunnel in Logatec, where the wind is powered by four big engines, has held activity days for Years 8 and 9 of primary school for some time.

With experiments in the wind tunnel, students learn about forces: what a force is, how it works etc. The focus is on Newton’s first and third laws. Students learn about all the factors affecting the force of resistance. In certain conditions, we prove that it is not necessary for rain to fall down. If they are met, rain can fall up too! Participants learn to walk against the wind and find out what playing with a ball would look like on the Moon, where gravity is lower than on Earth.

All processes taking place in the wind tunnel’s operation are recorded by a computer. Via the internet, this computer communicates with Latvian engineers, who monitor all the vital functions of the engines: bearing temperatures, vibrations, voltage fluctuations etc. By detecting irregularities in time, they can prevent major malfunctions.
