Geologists (palaeontologists) are scientists that study the development of life on Earth as revealed by fossils. Fossils are significant indicators of a living environment, provide information about the evolution of living beings and are also important for determining the age of geological strata, which is why understanding them and depicting them with images are crucial for understanding Earth’s development. AI tools are becoming more and more adept at processing and creating image information. In this activity, we will compare fossil sketches and models created by the participants based on scientific discoveries to those created by AI technology. In doing so, we will present the work of palaeontologists as well as graphic design and modelling techniques, evaluating the significance of scientific work and AI tools.
We will draw the fossil materials from one of the largest and most comprehensive geological collections in Slovenia, kept by the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering. All activities will thus be based on original specimens of fossil remains.
The event is being prepared for you by Dr Petra Žvab Rožič, Tristan Rome, Dr Luka Gale, Dr Helena Gabrijelčič Tomc and Dr Deja Muck (UL NTF).
