The Animal World as a Source of Inspiration for New Materials

Through evolution, animals have developed different structures enabling them to adapt to environmental conditions, defend against predators, feed, move, evolve etc. As a result, the animal world can be a limitless source of inspiration to scientists in synthesising new materials with specific properties, possibly providing a solution to many a challenge in medicine, construction, nutrition etc.

Through guided experimental research, primary and secondary school students assumed the roles of scientists to discover and compare the properties of different materials originating in the animal world. Based on reporting the results of the experimental exercise, they reflected on the advantages and challenges of using such materials in everyday life.
