On the occasion of the Šentjur School Centre’s Professional Day, interesting practical workshops were organised for 3rd and 4th year veterinary technician students:
The Face Says It All: Pain Assessment in Animals Using Facial Expressions, coordinators: Alenka Seliškar, PHD, Katerina Tomsič, PhD, Barbara Lukanc, PhD, Veterinary Faculty
The researchers presented the topic to the students with a short lecture and tested their knowledge using the Mentimeter web app. During the final debate, the students responded very well, participated actively and asked a lot of questions.
Viral Diseases: Transmission Route Animal-Human-Animal and Preventing Transmission in the Case of African Swine Fever, coordinators: Irena Golinar Oven, PhD, Jan Plut, PhD, Veterinary Faculty
The workshop was held with an introductory presentation and a practical demonstration of biosecurity measures when entering a pig farm with suspected ASF (preparation of ‘clean and unclean’ zones, donning and doffing of protective equipment, handling of samples, disinfection). Finally, the students carried out a practical demonstration of biosecurity measures themselves.
The Use of Animals for Research Purposes Enables Advances in Medicine and Helps to Improve Animal Welfare, coordinator: Tatjana Pirman, PhD, Biotechnical Faculty
The workshop introduced the students to the fields in which experimental and laboratory animals are used. The researchers encouraged the students to participate by asking questions, posing dilemmas and solving them. Their understanding of the topic was checked by a short questionnaire.
In all three workshops, students were very interested in participating and teachers were very interested in presenting the activities at their school.
