The introduction of the ChatGPT chatbot to the general public in November 2022 was a turning point in introducing artificial intelligence to higher education. Due to its simple use and natural-language conversation with users, it quickly drew global attention. As one of the most advanced and fastest-growing AI-driven consumer applications, it has won popularity among students. As young people are often at the forefront of the uptake of new technologies, their perception is particularly important in a discussion about ChatGPT. This presentation thus relates to one of the most extensive global studies yet exploring how students perceived ChatGPT in early 2024. Responses by 23,218 students from 109 countries, including Slovenia, provide an interesting insight into various aspects of ChatGPT, such as its use, performance, regulation and ethical concerns, satisfaction and attitude, studies-related challenges and results, skill development, labour market and skill mismatch, emotions. By comparing Slovenia and global trends, the presentation provides a broad insight into the impact of artificial intelligence in higher education and on students across the world, as well as raises important questions about the future of technology and its place in society.
