This workshop will present bracken, which is called stelja ‘litter’ in Bela Krajina as it was traditionally used for animal bedding there. Using a botanical press, we’ll print postcards with leaves of bracken, birch and other plants found in bracken-heavy areas. In addition to practical work, we will present the results of an ethnographic study so you can get acquainted with bracken and sites of bracken, the look of which has provided Bela Krajina with its specific character. Although bracken sites are now recognised as a cultural landscape with a rich biodiversity, they are disappearing rapidly due to people abandoning livestock farming and mowing bracken.
