»Man«, Animals, Monsters, and Women

The relation of man to animals seems to be one of the most important topics in the long history of the sciences and philosophy, the difference between the two being understood as an important indicator of what is or ought to be specifically human.

As pointed out by Georges Canguilhem, the distinction between the normal and the pathological in life sciences brought about important new insights, but it also brought about a rather productive »scientific imaginary«, related to Canguilhem’s epistemology of monsters and monstrosity, as elaborated further by Michel Foucault in his work on »the abnormals«.

Foucault has put special emphasis on the child sexuality and its regulation during the 19th century, but he was reluctant to bring Freud’s scientific revolution into the very core of his new studies.

The aim of the lecture and the discussion on »Man«, Animals, Monsters and Women is to bring in a new light, related to sexuality and sexual difference, as elaborated in Freud and Lacan, putting »real men« and »real women« in place of »Man« and abstract humans.

In this context, Freud’s discussion on the normal and the pathological seems to present a whole new »scientific gaze«, placing the female hysteria as a new starting point and a new strategic plan for subverting the whole long patriarchal philosophic and scientific tradition.

The event is organized in collaboration with the Society for Cultural Studies, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The lecture and debate will take place on the Zoom online platform, starting at 17:00.
