Ich zôch mir einen valken – I Raised a Falcon

The songs of German Minnesängers are almost unknown in the Slovenian language, and above all, they have not been collected in a publication that would explain their origin, function and at the same time introduce their authors. The vast majority of songs are also without musical notation.

As part of the European Researchers’ Night project, Mateja Gaber, PhD, (Faculty of Arts), Jani Kovačič (Bežigrad Gymnasium) and Aldo Kumar (Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television) will focus their attention on songs with animal theme.

This is primarily manifested in the image of the falcon, which can be found especially in the “dawn songs”.

The selected poems have been translated from Middle High German into Slovenian by Mateja Gaber, PhD, and will be set to music by Jani Kovačič and Aldo Kumar. Mateja Gaber’s translations will be published in a scientific monograph with an accompanying study.

Medieval German lyrics with animal themes will also be presented in schools, faculties and academies. The main event of the activity will take place on 13 September at 19:00 in the Ljubljana City Museum.

The workshop is suitable for secondary schools.
