This lecture and discussion will outline the highlights of the over-140-year history of underwater research in the Marshes section of the Ljubljanica riverbed, present the basic geomorphological characteristics of the riverbed and address the key sets of archaeological finds from all periods between the Middle Palaeolithic and Late Middle Ages. The main focus will be on relics of mesolithic hunters, the period when the riverbed was consolidated in the Middle Bronze Age, the rituals and cults of the Urnfield culture period, a rich set of late Iron Age and early Roman finds of weapons, military equipment and merchants’ goods, the various types of prehistoric and ancient watercraft and the use of transport potential in general as well as the intriguingly numerous finds of swords from the High and Late Middle Ages. During the excursion, we will sail past the northernmost pile-dwelling settlement in the Ljubljana Marshes, the location of an early Roman military port of a supply post in Prule and the location of a probable Carolingian fort on the confluence with Iščica.
