Animals Living in Idioms: A Linguistic Perspective

Sometimes Slovenians are on horses, sometimes on dogs. We are roosters and we are sheep. The French say you jump from a cock to a donkey if you speak incoherently, the English, who are at the source of information, learn something directly from a horse’s snout, the Germans have a frog in their throat when they croak, and the Italians send you to the wolf’s snout if they wish you luck.

Idioms are always the result of the cultural environment in which they originate, and some of them are similar in different languages. You can find out all this and more at a workshop on animal idioms organised by the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts. Find, identify and illustrate idioms with us!

 

The activity is for a group of primary school pupils. Registration is now closed. You are cordially invited to the other activities of the European Researchers’ Night!
